Argh.

Michael is taking a nap, so I decided to take the opportunity to do some half-hearted spring-cleaning before my mother-in-law comes to visit (ahem) Easter. ;)

Yesterday I dusted the mantel, which involved removing all the veils and statues and so forth.

Our Lenten mantel.
So today I did the same thing with the little table in our eating area.

I set the Blessed Mother on the floor, dusted, then turned around--and knocked her down against a chair. And saw something roll away from her.

It was Baby Jesus' head. :(

Can you see the crack?
It's not as bad as it might have been, but I am really, really sad. I absolutely love this statue. It was given to us as a wedding gift by the brothers at the Oratory. (Well, mostly by Brother Peter, I think; he picked it out for us.) And it is beautiful. I sometimes light-heartedly refer to her as "Our Lady of Homeschooling" since she's teaching Jesus how to read. :) And every night before bed Michael says goodnight to Mama Mary and Baby Jesus and we pray a Hail Mary, and he loves to gently touch her on the head.

I hate being such a klutz. I knocked over statues and broke them all the time as a kid; pretty much all the ones I owned had their heads or hands glued back on, some more than once. And I hate it that we've had this statue for about a year and a half and I've already broken it. I do feel like this is one of our most treasured possessions as a family.

We will glue His head on at some point. I just hope it looks okay. :(

  1. We have a Mary statue made by the same company, and we had recently relocated her to a small little wall-mounted shelf. The shelf fell, and she broke into about 6 different pieces. But! You can't tell, unless you're looking for it.

Glad to see you guys picked up some purple fabric. I've been thinking about snapping a few pictures of our Passiontide home as well for the blog, but I'm probably too lazy to actually do it...

    1. I don't like the fabric I ended up getting; it's stiff cotton so it wrinkles and sticks out funny from the smaller statues. I may get something silkier next year ... but maybe not. :-P

Good to hear that your statue still looks okay. Luckily the crack really isn't in that bad of a place. But it's still so frustrating, especially since it happened through my own clumsiness. :(

  2. I'm sorry, there's just something morbidly funny about knocking off Jesus's head ALMOST three days before Easter. If you had cleaned on Thursday, this klutzy moment would've been *priceless*.

  3. Awesome job with the veiling. I've wanted to do that for many years, but I never seem to be able to get my hands on some purple fabric in time to make some before Passiontide has come and gone. Also I'm somewhat daunted by all the religious images I would have to cover... just quickly counting... at least 20.

    1. Haha, we don't have twenty, but I think I veiled twelve images/statues? (The one I miss most is the Mother and Child that I keep over my sink; I keep looking at her and she's veiled.) It takes less fabric than you'd think, though, and once you cut them out then you have them ready for every year after. :)

  4. I'm glad that it's at least fixable! I'm pretty sure at least half the figurines in our nativity set have had to be super-glued back together. We've only used it for three Christmases and none of the accidents were even the result of little kids. Yikes! I think we need to invest in wood or plastic version...
